Inganekwane is a fairytale which is means it is a children's story about things that doesnt exists. Inganekwane is a story that is often told by elder people to children's. In zulu there are 6 categories of izinganekwane.
Inganekwane is not a true story, if it is a true story than we call that history, which is not a form of a fairytale. Izinganekwane can have animal actors that can speak and behave like humans, inganekwane can have humans as well. Inganekwane could also have things that are not alive given life. example: Talking stones, talking mountains, talking rivers, talking trees, dancing sun. Example of inganekwane where things are given life, is a fairytale where ilahle (coal) and ubhontshisi (bean) decided to go for a swim because it was too hot.
Why inganekwane is important? what is so special about fairytales? Inganekwane are stories for kids, there are lessons found on the inganekwane, some inganekwane are told for entertainment purposes. Ogogo nomkhulu abaxoxela abazukulu izinganekwane which means grandparents are the one that are narrating fairytales to the kids.
Zixoxelwani izinganekwane? Izinganekwane zixoxelwa izingane ezincane, zinesifundo ositholayo izinganekwane, ezinye ke izinganekwane zixoxelwa ukujabulisa izingane. Isikhathi esiningi izinganekwane zixoxwa ogogo nomkhulu bezixoxela izingane bese beyazibuza ukuthi zifundeni kwinganekwane.Isakhiwo senganekwane looks at how inganekwane is made. inganekwane always starts with the words "KWASUKASUKELA" , the word kwasukela, has a root, "SUKA" which means "starts" , kwasukasukela is the word which tells audience that the inganekwane is starting. There are many ways of starting the first sentence of fairytale but normal it would start with a main actor(s), e.g. "Kwasukela there was a sick lion in the mountains of kwamhlabuyalingana" When inganekwane ends, the narrator will then say "cosu cosu iyaphela" This tell the listeners that the the fairytale is finished. The kids will then say "siyayibonga imnandi" which means "thank you we enjoyed it".
Izinganekwane can only be told at night, during the day nguni people in south africa are busy planting/taking care of the livestock/ kids will be playing. There is no time for inganekwane during the day, as a result it became a rule that fairytales can only be told at night when all duties for the day are done.
